Prevent Frost Build Up in a Freezer

Frigidaire repairFrost build up in a freezer can be a fairly common occurrence. Not only is it annoying because it wastes space in the freezer, it can even lead to odors. Sometimes it’s natural and the best solution is to simply melt the ice and drain the freezer –a tedious and annoying task. But there are a few ways you can prevent buildup from happening.

One of the best solutions is to purchase a frost-free freezer. They are temperature controlled to keep frost from developing at all. Most new freezer appliances are frost-free these days. Try placing a dehumidifier in the kitchen. A common cause of freezer buildup is high humidity. During the summer the humidity goes into the freezer as you  have it open which freezes up.

Ensure that the freezer door shuts tightly and that it is always closed quickly. Keeping the door open a long time allows too much warm air. After the door is shut, the moisture in the warm air instantly freezes, creating frost. Try lowering the temperature in the freezer too. Lastly, keep your freezer clean. Without excess moisture and dirt in there, there will be nothing to turn into frost.
