I feel like I was regularly scarred by television growing up. Happy Days made me very nervous about a mysterious practice called “frenching.” Different Strokes made me afraid of dozens of things through several troubling “very special” episodes. But perhaps the thing I was most afraid of was the washing machine. Greg Brady of the Brady Bunch once had some trouble with their washing machine. As an adult that sounds annoying but not very scary. But Greg got caught in a cartoonishly scary amount of laundry soap and the effects left him shrunk and learning a valuable lesson. I can’t remember what that lesson was because I was too afraid of the ticking shrink-bomb sitting in our basement.
A year or so after the episode I walked down the basement only to see those very familiar suds overflowing from the washing machine. In my mind our own basement was now completely uninhabitable lest you be reduced to inches of your former self. Turned out all we really needed was a Whirlpool appliance repair specialist. Turned out he was a Maytag dryer repair specialist too. Never one to pass up a good deal Mom got some light repair on that as well. From then on I knew no appliance problem was too small for a well trained specialist. Greg Brady should have known better.
